  • Harley-Davidson LiveWire is H-D’s first electric product.

  • Will go on sale by 2020 at the latest.

  • Offers 105bhp electric motor, 235km range.

Harley-Davidson will unveil the LiveWire, its first electric product, in India on August 27. The LiveWire is the company’s first all-electric motorcycle that is expected to go on sale in India either late this year or by next year. It has a 15.5kWh battery powering a motor that is good for 78kW or 105bhp. Torque is rated at 116Nm. This being an electric motorcycle, those figures don’t seem impressive – but it will still get from 0-100kph in 3.5 seconds. Claimed range is 235km on a single charge, which puts it even with the range offered by large motorcycles on a full tank of petrol.

The suspension consists of fully adjustable Showa big piston forks in front and a Showa monoshock at the rear. A 4.3-inch TFT screen displays all the necessary information to the rider. The Bluetooth connectivity offers the rider the option of navigation a song playlist, receiving calls, and even getting turn-by-turn navigation via an app. Of course, there is a full suite of electronics. Harley’s term to encompass it all is ‘Reflex Defensive Rider System’, which includes ABS, cornering ABS, traction control, cornering traction control, front-wheel lift mitigation, and drag-torque slip control. It also offers four riding modes: Road, Rain, Sport, and Range – which offers that 235km figure.

The Harley-Davidson LiveWire is a halo model for the company to show the path it will follow going forward, but of particular importance is the second half of the company’s announcement: it will also unveil a small-displacement product along with the LiveWire. This product will be developed and produced in conjunction with an Asian motorcycle manufacturer and will make the iconic brand far more accessible than it has been so far to the masses. The Milwaukee-based brand is a very strong one in the Indian market, so everyone else in the leisure/cruiser motorcycling segments in India will have a strong competitor to account for in the near future.
