One can expect an Indian launch of the 4WD Land Rover Defender in late 2020.
The five-door Land Rover Defender 110 gets the initial launch with the 3-door Land Rover Defender 90 to follow soon. The distinctive feature of the Land Rover Defender is the styling. The exterior carries the same rugged looks as that of the iconic model. The common characteristics are the front/rear overhangs, its upright stance, and unique wheel arches. The folding fabric roof, a side ladder, roof-mounted tent, and side window carriers add to the versatility.
The vehicle has all the features of an off-road car such as visible door handles/bolts, inset bonnet, side-hinged boot, and a spare wheel. Other features include 291mm road clearance, a 38-degree approach, and 40-degree departure angle, a wading depth of 900mm, a maximum payload of 900kg, a roof load capacity of 300kg, and towing capability of 3500kg.
The dashboard is set low to enhance visibility. The next-gen infotainment system comprises of a 10-inch screen display, a user-friendly system known as Pivi Pro. The Land Rover Defender 110 has a dash-mounted gear shifter, thereby freeing enough space to accommodate six or seven people. The Land Rover Defender 90 is a 6-seater. Boot space of 1,075 liters can go up to 2,390 liters by collapsing the second row of seats.

The Land Rover Defender sits on the famed D7x platform. This stiff aluminum structure can accommodate electrified powertrains. On the mechanical front, the vehicle has a 4WD, coir/air spring suspension, twin-speed transmission system, and a locking center/rear locking differential. The Configurable Terrain Response system uses electronic aids to enable off-road driving. Three throttle levels and gearbox sensitivity boost driver control. Other features include ClearSight Ground view, Enhanced Hill Hold, and Hill Launch Assist.
On the engine front, the Land Rover Defender comes with a 4 or 6-cylinder diesel, as well as petrol engines. A hybrid variant will soon arrive by 2020, maybe with the name P400e.
The petrol engines P300 and P400 can race from 0 to 100kmph in 8.1 and 6.4 seconds respectively. The diesel variants D200 and D240 take 10.3 and 9.1 seconds respectively.
The Land Rover Defender will be available in India by the end of 2020. India might receive the 5-door Defender 110 with either the petrol or diesel engine.
