Vitara Brezza and S-Cross currently powered by diesel engines only.
BS Vl is forcing diesel power out.
The expectation is that these two models will switch to the BS Vl petrol engine.
Four-cylinder 1.5-litre engine generates 104bhp and 138Nm.
It will be offered with either manual or automatic transmissions.
It will get SHVS start/stop technology as well.
Maruti Suzuki is gradually shifting its range to BS Vl compatible engines well in advance of the mandatory switch to the new emission norms, and two more models are expected to make the switch soon – the Vitara Brezza and the S-Cross.
These two models are currently powered by Maruti’s Fiat-sourced 1.3-liter four-cylinder DDiS diesel engine only, but the BS-Vl norms make it very difficult to keep an oil burner in the lineup. So they will switch to the 1.5-liter K15B that debuted in the Ciaz. This engine generates 104bhp and 138Nm and will be mated to either a five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed torque converter automatic.

Additionally, the engine gets the SHVS start/stop system, which Maruti Suzuki likes to call ‘mild hybrid’. In all likelihood, the BS Vl upgrades will make it to market in time for the festive season as it will help drive sales figures up – the Vitara Brezza has recently lost its sales crown to the Hyundai Venue.
The switch to BS-Vl emission norms is scheduled for 1 April 2020, although quite a few manufacturers have chosen to start upgrading their models from now itself. The Vitara Brezza competes in the sub-4m SUV segment with the Hyundai Venue, Ford EcoSport, Mahindra XUV 300, Tata Nexon, and Honda WR-V.
The S-Cross is more in the mold of a crossover than an SUV and competes with a lot of the same models as the Vitara Brezza, but additionally with the likes of the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
