  • Aprilia RS 660 teased.

  • Unveil scheduled for EICMA Milan, next month.

  • Will fit in at the premium end of the middleweight supersport segment.

  • Will compete with the Yamaha YZF-R6, Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R and Triumph Daytona 765.

Aprilia has teased the RS 660, their upcoming middleweight supersport model. The RS 660 will plug a substantial gap between the other two supersport models that the Italian manufacturer provides in various markets globally, the RS 125, and the RSV4 1100.

The Aprilia RS 660 was displayed at last year’s EICMA in Milan, Italy, as a concept motorcycle. With the teaser, it is confirmed that the production version will be unveiled at this year’s event in a few weeks.

The teaser doesn’t reveal much (and it shouldn’t, it IS  a teaser, after all) but what we can glean from it is that it will have an LED headlamp, a double bubble windscreen, and the pillion rider will have to be left behind. There are also winglets on the fairing like we see these days on MotoGP machinery.

There seem to be a couple of variants that will be made available. One will have relatively low-cost suspension from Sachs, and some other low-cost components like indicators with regular bulbs.

The higher-spec variant will offer LED indicators and fully adjustable Ohlins suspension. Braking will be provided by Brembo, and we’re sure the calipers will be top-notch units considering its positioning at the premium end of its segment.

We can also expect a six-axis IMU from Bosch and a two-way quick shifter, with a slipper clutch, cornering ABS, and traction control with massive adjustability.

A lot of manufacturers are shying away from the 600cc supersport segment as the initial investment is almost the same for a 1000cc model, but the latter can be priced higher.

However, models such as the MV Agusta F3 800 prove that there still is a market for a premium middleweight supersport, if it is positioned right. The Aprilia RS 660 will compete with the Yamaha YZF-R6, Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R, and the upcoming Triumph Daytona 765.
