Maruti Suzuki had earlier announced that it will be phasing out its diesel engine variants in the BSVI era.
Now, the rumor going around town is that Maruti Suzuki plans to reintroduce the 1.6L diesel engine on select models.
These diesel engines will comply with the strict BSVI emission norms.
Complying with BSVI emission norms entails carrying out significant changes to the existing diesel engines. As these changes could result in the price of the vehicle shooting upwards, Maruti Suzuki Had decided to phase out the diesel engine variants of its models.
Now, it is rumored that Maruti Suzuki will reintroduce the Fiat 1.6L diesel engine to comply with BSVI emission norms. Initially, the BSIV version of this engine was available on the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross. However, the weak demand forced the company to discontinue its production.
Maruti Suzuki updated most of its petrol-driven vehicles to comply with BSVI emission norms. Thus, you have the Maruti Suzuki XL6, Ertiga, Baleno, Swift, Dzire, and the newly-launched S-Presso becoming BSVI-compliant vehicles.
Reports state that Maruti Suzuki will now fit the 1.6L diesel engine in selective models like Maruti Suzuki S-Cross, the XL6 6-seater MPV, and the upcoming competitor to the Mahindra XUV500.
Maruti Suzuki has realized that the SUV and MPV automobile market has a high demand for BSVI-compliant diesel engines. The buyer’s preference has also seen a subtle shift from the sedans and hatchbacks to the larger SUVs and MPVs. Maruti Suzuki could not afford to lose out on this SUV and MPV segment, especially in the premium vehicle market.
However, the entry-level buyers still prefer petrol-driven vehicles because of the comparatively lower cost and an extended lifespan when compared to diesel vehicles.
The Fiat 1.6L diesel engine will be seen in the market during the latter half of 2020, thereby indicating that the company has stopped manufacturing in-house 1.5L diesel engines.
