  • Maruti Suzuki S-Cross 1.6 Diesel BS6 spied testing.

  • The test car had 1.6 badges on boot and DDiS badges on fenders.

  • Emissions testing setup at the back.

  • Could this be the S-Cross for BS Vi emission norms?

Maruti has gone on record saying that it will move a lot of its models to petrol-only status when the upcoming BS Vl emission norms roll around. However, buyers in the SUV/crossover market might still prefer a diesel engine, so that meant that the Vitara Brezza and the S-Cross, both available with only diesel power, had some tough questions that needed to be answered.

However, an S-Cross has been spied testing, and it had a few clues as to what Maruti might choose to do, going forward. The S-Cross in question had a ‘1.6’badge on the boot lid, and it also had ‘DDiS’ badging in its usual place on the flanks.

This suggests it was running the 1.6-liter Multijet diesel sourced from Fiat. It also had an emission-testing kit set up at the exhaust.

This makes some sense, considering Fiat sells the 1.6 in the European market, which in turn means that it can be tuned to run on BS Vl fuel relatively easily. Yes, Maruti does have its own BS Vl – ready 1.5-liter diesel engine but it perhaps doesn’t meet the requirements of the S-Cross.

The 1.6-liter engine wasn’t very popular with S-Cross owners thanks to its high pricing and was therefore axed from the lineup not long after the model was launched. However, we expect it to make a comeback as a stopgap measure at least, for the S-Cross. Of course, there will be a petrol engine as an option, come in April 2020.

It would certainly be interesting to see if the Vitara Brezza also gets the 1.6 as an update, or whether Maruti will get the 1.5-liter diesel ready for the Brezza.
