  • MG ZS EV bookings will start by late December 2019.

  • MG ZS EV launch could happen sometime early next year.

  • MG Motors plans to price the MG ZS EV at around Rs 22 lakhs to compete with the Hyundai Kona Electric.

MG Hector SUV was a success in India despite the downturn in the automobile sector. MG Motors plans to expand its footprint by launching the MG ZS EV in January 2020.

The price announcement could also happen before its launch. However, speculation is rife that MG ZS EV price in India will be around Rs 22 lakhs. The booking for the vehicle is starting in December 2019.

Electric vehicles are in its nascent stage in India. MG Motor has a reputation for being innovative in its approach. Rajeev Chaba, MD, and President of MG Motor India state that the company is concentrating on educating the customers about electric vehicles and striving to provide a great experience. Volumes will always follow in due course.

Cost is a critical factor. Hence, MG plans to adopt the CKD strategy (Completely-Knocked-Down) for the manufacture of MG ZS EV. The company has already started the trial production of the vehicle at its Halol plant in Gujarat.

MG Motors plans to introduce this EV as a rival to Hyundai Kona Electric. The pricing could be in the range of Rs 22 lakhs. Similar to the Kona Electric, the MG ZS EV will be available in a single variant. MG also plans to limit the launch to five cities, Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad.

This battery-operated vehicle is already a success in the UK, China, and Thailand. In India, the MG ZS EV will feature a 150hp electric motor with a 44.5Kwh Li-ion battery. It could deliver 335 km on the older NEDC Test Cycle, whereas the results of the newer WLTP testing procedure shows a mileage of 262km.

A 7kW AC charger could take seven hours for charging the batteries, whereas a 50kW turbocharger could recharge up to 80% within 40 minutes.

MG ZS EV could well redefine electric vehicles in India.
